Florencia Pierri is a doctoral candidate in the Program in the History of Science, broadly interested in early modern history of science, especially the history of natural history.

Her dissertation, entitled “A World of Wonder: Exotic Animals in Early Modern Europe,” examines how European travelers, naturalists, scholars, and collectors in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries reacted to, described, and understood exotic animals in the age of European expansion.

The project focuses on how reports of exotic animals, as well as the specimens themselves, gave rise to a new way of studying animals in this period, eventually leading to a new set of assumptions and new rubrics that changed the way scholars studied natural history itself, particularly as it related to animals.
