Princeton Alumni Weekly Spotlights Matthew Jones’ work on “History of Data, Surveillance, and AI”

Matthew Jones, Smith Family Professor in History and CREMS associated faculty member, is featured in the April 2026 issue of Princeton Alumni Weekly. The article, “Matthew Jones Studies the History of Data, Surveillance, and AI,” is part of the PAW’s Behind the Research series.

Jones’ research focuses on the history of recent information technologies and intelligence as well as the history of science and technology in early modern Europe. His latest book projects will “explore the evolution of this surveillance and the gulf between technological advancements and the law — particularly around privacy and the Fourth Amendment,” according to the story.

He is currently co-teaching the course “Data & Culture” with Meredith Martin (English and Center for Digital Humanities).
